a5c7b9f00b To win a bet, an eccentric British inventor beside his Chinese valet and an aspiring French artist, embarks on a trip full of adventures and dangers around the world in exactly 80 days.
An adventurer, Passepartout, ends up accompanying time-obsessed English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, on a daring mission to journey around the world. Fogg has wagered with members of his London club that he can traverse the world in 80 days. Along the way, they encounter many interesting 19th Century figures and have many exciting and suspenseful situations in their voyage around the world.
I watched this film because I walked past the set in Berlin where the ending scene was filmed.

It was the first time I stumbled on a Hollywood film set, and I was excited to see the end result.

Though the film did make me laugh out loud at times, I was disappointed by this film. It concentrated too much on the comical mishaps along the journey. It made too little mention of how they travel from one place to another. It became a collection of funny clips shot in various places that are put together.

I was surprised by the number of big stars playing small parts: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson. Even Richard Branson was in it, which was a big little surprise.

This film is a nice film for the family. Don't expect too much though.
From the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" episode "The Touch of Satan":

Girl in movie: "I'm possessed by the devil."

Tom Servo: "Michael Eisner?"

It's hard to decide what I hate most about this new "Around the World in 80 Days." From changing Phileas Fogg into a goofy inventor and outcast from his social club (the wager was never about "never inventing again"), to the appalling special effects, to the horrid cameos… it's a very close call! Oh now I know! Dave Stewart singing a particularly nauseating version of "All Around the World" – "Everybody from every nation, everybody join the celebration…" ARRRHHGHHHH! Afterwards I had to listen to Lipps Inc's "Funkytown" for three hours just to get that bleedin' tune out of my head. When that didn't do the trick I tried Michael Sembello's "Maniac", but still no luck. Only sweet, sweet mead could soothe the pain caused by this latest Disney excretion. Oh, sweet, tasty mead, shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate, more exquisite and more pleasant, more divine and more balmy – all in all the smoothest, and best tasting Ren Fest wine ever made! Long has this fine concoction been unavailable to aficionados in many parts of the country – especially here in dreary old Atlanta – but fear not, for the Bargetto online winery is here for the rescue, ready to deliver delicious Chaucer's Mead to your home at the touch of a button. To paraphrase the Bard, the delivery is swift, and flies with a swallow's wings. It's not just for peasants anymore!

Anyway, I think my point is pretty obvious: Avoid this film at all costs!
Any resemblance between Jules Verne's marvelous science fiction novel or Mike Todd's enjoyable 1956 movie is pure happenstance. This is simply a Jackie Chan movie pitched to youngsters who enjoy slapstick fights and goofy caricatures.
No. For the most part this is a film that draws loose inspiration from the Verne novel. A more faithful adaptation was made in 1956.

To name a few specific and obvious changes from the novel:

-In the film, Phileas Fog is an eccentric inventer who takes a bet for a position of auhority. In the book he was a recluse who spent most of his time playing cards and the bet was simply a sum of money.

-Passpartout in the book was much more open with Fog. He was being honest when he said he was French, and there was no sub-plot about him taking advantage of Fog to achieve a hidden agenda. Also in the film he is responsible for the bank robbery, despite having nothing to do with it in the book.

-While the bank robbery did happen in the book, it is given a larger role and servesmotivation for the characters. Lord Kelvin also pins it on Fogan excuse to keep him from winning the bet. In the book, the robbery happened of-screen and had nothing to do the main characters. Inspector Fix only mistook Fog for the robber because his appearance matched the description he had been given of the actual criminal.

-In the film, Inspector Fix is depicteda dim-witted officer who is manipulated by Kelvin. In the book, he was much more reasonable, having mistaken Fog for the robber based on his appearance matching the description. He also eventually helps Fog and releases him when he realizes his mistake.

-The love interest in the book was an Indian princess, not a French artist.
